- Skin irritation e.g. with burning sensation, itching
- Redness and swelling
- Damaged skin
- Dryness (e.g. after radiation treatment and in the menopause)
- Soreness in the anal area, primarily due to diarrhoea, rhagades and haemorrhoids
- To prevent lesions and irritation after sexual contact
Deumavan Protective ointment is a water-free ointment for daily local use on the external genitals (labia, perineum and anal area). It is used to relieve complaints such as skin irritation (e.g. with burning sensation, itching, redness and swelling), damaged skin, dryness (due to hormone deficiency, e.g. in the menopause), after radiation treatment, soreness in the anal area, in particular due to diarrhoea and rhagades.
The skin in the entire genital area is damaged by mechanical loads such as running, sitting, cycling, sporting activities and sexual contacts. Urine, defecation and wearing nappies also stress the skin in the genital area. Cleaning with soap or also with water only damages and degreases the upper layer of the skin – known as the horny layer of skin. It becomes drier, more sensitive and more vulnerable to injury.
Declining hormone production also means the skin becomes thinner and less robust. This can all lead to painful skin damage that opens the door to germs.
How does Deumavan work?
Deumavan Protective ointment improves the elasticity of the skin (horny layer) by creating a thin layer of fat (mix of highly pure paraffins). It does not contain any pharmacological substances (stabilisers/emulsifiers or preservatives) or hormones.
The therapeutic effect is based on improving the elasticity of the upper layer of skin – horny layer of skin – and reducing the transepidermal loss of water. This supplements natural sebum production.
The protective film created by the ointment does not compromise the barrier function of the skin, but skin lesions that open the door to germs will be covered and new lesions largely prevented. This is why Deumavan is also suitable for wound care.
Applying Deumavan Protective ointment before defecating will reduce the adhesion of bowel bacteria, which consist up to 50 % of microorganisms, on the skin around the anus. This will make cleaning easier without causing painful skin damage. In addition, fewer germs will get into the vagina or bladder.
Dosing instructions, type and duration of use
Take Deumavan Protective ointment out of the tube/tin with clean and dry fingers or clean tissue (e.g. toilet paper) and apply a thin layer to the affected areas of skin. The tube opening should not come into contact with the skin to be treated. It can be reapplied in the same way as soon as the soothing and protective effect wears off.
There are no time restrictions on the frequency and duration of use of Deumavan Protective ointment – it can be applied as needed. Use is recommended:
- as preventative and lasting protection before and after physical exertion (e.g. sport)
- after washing
- before and after defecation and urination
- after sexual contact
- as accompanying support if changes in the skin occur

Frequently asked questions
Why does an oily liquid leak out when the tube is opened?
In rare cases, a small amount of oily liquid can leak out when the tube is first opened. This is not a quality defect, but is a property of the product caused by the special composition of three nurturing ingredients. This does not change the consistency and mode of action of the Deumavan Protective ointment.
The leakage of oil can occur in rare cases if the product
- is not used regularly and is left unused for long periods of time.
- is stored or transported at a temperature above 30°C.
There may be minimal local separation and the product may appear more liquid due to stress caused when squeezing it out of the tube. The product can generally continue to be used safely.
